Dr. Richard Korentager

Dr. Richard Korentager is Chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Kansas, Program Director of the Integrated Plastic Surgery Program for the University of Kansas Medical School, and Medical Director of the Burnett Burn Center. His areas of specialization include body contouring surgery, cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery, and both surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic enhancement procedures for the face and body. Dr. Korentager’s expertise as a laser specialist is facilitated by access to a range of lasers, often utilized in combination and highly customized to the needs of each individual patient.
Dr. Korentager has been in practice since 1989 and is certified in Plastic Surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. Originally from Toronto, Canada, Dr. Korentager earned his medical degree and completed his Plastic Surgery residency at the University of Toronto. He went on to complete additional fellowship training in breast surgery.
Under his guidance, the Department of Plastic Surgery has tripled in size during the past 18 months and continues to grow and expand the scope of services offered to patients. In addition to the full range of plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures, Dr. Korentager and his colleagues are regularly called upon to perform secondary corrective surgeries for patients who have had prior plastic surgery procedures done elsewhere that resulted in problems or complications.
“We have an excellent team of surgeons, each with specific areas of expertise, and our patients benefit tremendously from medical care provided by a group that believes in a team approach to care. We want them to have the advantage of access to both University and hospital resources, and our Medical Center — regularly named a top hospital on the national level — has won many awards. Our patients receive highly individualized state-of-the-art care in a highly collaborative environment and we are proud to be able to offer them an unparalleled scope of care.”
In addition to his surgical and administrative work, Dr. Korentager and his team conduct continuous research in order to verify and utilize the safest and most advanced techniques. In his capacity as both Program Director and educator for the University’s Medical School, he considers an important part of his department’s mission to be “the training future surgeon-leaders from 1st year medical students to those completing their Residency programs.” His desire to educate extends to the surrounding community, as well. Throughout his career, Dr. Korentager has been featured on the Discovery Channel’s “Medical Miracles” and he has been called on by the media many times to comment as an expert on plastic surgery.
Dr. Korentager is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the nation's most prestigious organization of Board Certified plastic surgeons specializing in cosmetic surgery. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member (and past President) of the Kansas City Society of Plastic Surgeons.
