Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a clinical exfoliation technique that offers a less invasive approach to dermabrasion and chemical peels.

As in dermabrasion, an abrading tool is applied to the skin to scrape away blemishes and other disfigurements, quickly improving the skin’s appearance. With Microdermabrasion, however, only the outermost skin layer most visible is treated so that the body can quickly respond to treatment, rushing to the replace the damaged skin skills with fresh, healthy cells. The minimally invasive approach means there is little downtime, and lower risk for infection or other side effects.

Should I Consider Microdermabrasion?

You may want to think about treatment if you want to improve your skin’s appearance. Sun damage and aging can result in dull skin, wrinkles, and an uneven texture. The procedure is suitable for all skin types, which gives it an added advantage over deep chemical peels and dermabrasion, which can result in bring side effects like depigmentation.

Microdermabrasion may be right for you if you are bothered by the appearance of:

  • Dull skin
  • Mild sun damage
  • Fine lines
  • Rough skin texture
  • Acne blemishes
  • Enlarged pores

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

A microdermabrasion procedure can easily be conducted in your plastic surgeon's office and requires as little as 30-60 minutes of your time.

Your plastic surgeon uses an abrading mechanism that uses a high-pressure stream of crystals such as aluminum oxide, sodium chloride, or sodium bicarbonate. The crystals are delivered to the skin by way of a connecting tube. The vacuuming action of the microdermabrader selects the skin to be treated, and removes the crystals and exfoliated skin. Only a couple passes with the microdermabrader are necessary to complete your treatment.

Aftercare For Microdermabrasion

Most individuals who receive microdermabrasion treatment usually return directly to their everyday routine with no downtime. Some may experience mild edema and erythema, mild side effects that can last anywhere between one hour to two days. Repeat sessions may be recommended in order to achieve the best results.
